Standard Change vs Regular Change vs Emergency Change

Effective change management helps organizations deliver updates quickly while minimizing risk. Changes are commonly classified into standard, regular (normal), and emergency changes, each serving a different purpose. Standard changes are low-risk, routine, and pre-approved. They follow a predefined procedure and do not require separate approval each time. Examples include user access updates or scheduled patching. These changes enable speed and consistency. Regular (normal) changes involve moderate to high risk and require formal assessment and approval. They are planned, reviewed by a Change Advisory Board (CAB), and scheduled to reduce business impact. Typical examples include new application deployments or infrastructure upgrades. Emergency changes are implemented urgently to resolve critical incidents or security threats. While documentation and testing may be minimal upfront, these changes must undergo a post-implementation review to ensure accountability and prevent recurrence. Using the right change type ensures agility, control, and stability in IT operations.
